Don’t do that-discount weave extensions

Oct 21, 2008 by

Hola!  I’ve recently returned from a wonderful vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.  I’m rested, tan and suffering from a head cold.  However, I have been noticing a trend that has been bothering me for quite some time.  I feel like it needs to be addressed and since it is a fashion-related trend, I wanted to address it here.

A couple of months ago, I made a hair transition.  I cut off my dred locs and started wearing my hair in various styles.  The first style I wore was a wavy weave extension.  This was my first time with a major weave extension and I learned a lot.  I learned that good weave is pricey and I also learned that there is a wide variety of it.  The hair that I had was mid grade quality.  It wasn’t top quality hair that can cost $80 plus a bundle but it wasn’t low quality hair that can cost less than $15 a bundle.  I wore my hair in that style for about 6 weeks and it lasted well.  Once I learned to tame the waves, it could have lasted a little longer but I was going out of the country and I needed something lower maintenance.

I went from the weave style to a braided extension style where the hair prices varied even more.  I saw hair that cost as little as $.99 a pack and as much as $49 a pack.  Again, I got mid grade hair that is holding up well but with all of my recent hair purchasing, I have become a lot more aware of other people’s hair.  In this, I’ve noticed a very disturbing trend.  There are many women that wear low quality hair extensions.  Since hair extensions go beyond race and age, it is a broad reaching issue.

You can wear a great outfit, with great shoes and have on flawless makeup, but if your hair looks bad, it will ruin everything.  I have nothing against hair extensions.  In fact, I am a proponent of them.  I wear them myself.  However, if you choose to enhance your hair, do it with mid to high quality hair extensions.  If you’re in doubt about what is good hair, take the time to ask around.  The first place to start is with your hair stylist.  He/she should be able to give you an idea of what brand of hair to look for and how much it should cost.  This is a good starting point.  Then you should find a good beauty supply store with knowledgeable associates.  Your hairstylist may be able to recommend a place as well but if not, there should be someone at the salon you can ask.

If you want to experiment with new hair styles, colors and cuts, please do so.  One great thing about fashion is that it exists without boundaries.  You are free to experiment but do so with good quality things.  No matter what you do, if you do it cheaply, you will look cheap.  Don’t look cheap.  Look fabulous.

I totally agree with you. I have been wearing sew in hair weaves over 10 years. For the past year, I’ve gone the straight hair route and have paid for the more expensive $80/bag hair. I have been loving it! Well, since money has gotten a little shorter, I decided to try something new (i.e. cheaper). Well, that was a BIG mistake! I really do believe that this hair I’m wearing now has some non-human components and I will never wear it again (Ultra Twin Quattro Pack $35). It just looks dead! I just washed it and it is shedding all over the place, guess I’ve gotten spoiled. I’m going back to Goddess Remi.

I totally understand LaToya. I am new to weaves and I had a curly sew in a couple of months ago that was wonderful. When I got my hair braided, I opted for a less expensive type of hair and now it’s not as soft as it was when I first got it. I definitely advocate for spending the money on the more expensive hair if you’re going to wear it. Thanks for sharing your experience!

This Is My Second Time Wearing A Sew In and Im Trying To Convince My Dad To Go Up To The Price Of Weave and To Stop Getting The Low Quality Weave. Which Did Good For Lik A Week And Then I Dont Know What Happened. How Can I Keep My Hair From Getting So Tangled? I HATE The Tangle.

Unfortunately, Jordan, with some hair weaves, the tangles are inevitable. I’ve found that you have to work to keep the tangles away from the beginning. I have mini braids that are loose at the ends with wavy, human hair. I use Bio Silk on the loose part of my braids and it helps to keep them from getting tangled even after I’ve had them for a while. You can get Bio Silk from Ulta and if you don’t have an Ulta in your city, visit http://www.ulta.com. Good luck and yes you should definitely convince your day to pay a little more for higher quality hair.

    Hi

I just found your blog and posted a comment in another tread. I can’t help myself but comment this. I work in a company in Denmark that import hair extensions from Asia. Mainly China that is. And in Denmark most of the imported extensions are of a very low quality. We have decided to go upscale in regards to quality and we have learned that more and more people appreciate quality before prize.

Thanks you so far for a very interesting blog. I will dig in deeper :-)

  9. The amount of different types of hair quality that has reached the marked in the last few years is amazing.
One really has too look out for what they are getting.

Of course it can be difficult when purchasing on the internet.

To begin with we tried getting home something from China, but it was terrible, so now we have hair extensions from Sensationnel.

Chinese hair extensions are not all that. I found them thin and stringy. Indian remy hair is thick and luscious. I really love the natural textures and durability. Now I’ll have the perfect locks I deserve!

Wow great article I really like what you wrote a lot. I tried clip on but I realized I needed a more permanent solution. Sew in weaves are great and can last for over a full year if maintained properly. My last purchase was from PerfectLocks.com and I am very happy with the hair.

  12. I have always had a hard time finding the right styles. I try to look in magazines or I print out pictures of styles I like and bring them with me to the salon.

Every company has a high-end usually called 100percent Remi/Remy hair and a lower-end one “100 percent hair”. The price varies greatly. You will usually get what you pay for. The cheaper the hair the lower the quality. if you need a cheaper hair, a general rule would be to try to stick to the main brands but still have in the back of your mind that anything could still go wrong. If you must have cheaper hair, try Fashion Source or Harlem 125. They are medium sized companies and probably still care about their clients.

Nioxin products are good for thinning hair. They’re a bit more expensive than some, but it’s worth the cost.

I love what you are doing with this article. Right on! As a hair care products researcher, I totally agree with your take on this. I found some pictures of great looking summer hairstyles. Ping back to me if you are interested to see them. I am 18 years old, and Fashion is the greatest!. I always have been addicted and I always will. I love what you are doing with this post.

I have thin hair and I have used the Nioxin product line on my hair and although it took awhile to see any results, my hair did start to feel stronger.

As far as hair pieces go, I love to wear clip in hair extensions because they don’t damage the hair and can help add volume to my already thin hair.

  20. I really do agree with you. If you are thinking to look beautiful then money should not come in the way. Hair extensions should be wear who have quality and brand name , never expect discount on weavy otherwise gonna loose your hair beauty.

This question has many sides, from one side it’s good you don’t need to visit a hairdresser often but from other your own heir stay with less air and become dirty fast.

  22. The difference is quality between professionally fitted hair extensions and cheaper low-grade extensions fitted at home is greater than most people probably realise. In many cases the effects of poorly fitted hair extensions outweigh the benefits of even having them in the first place! For example glue and heat attached extensions limit the styling options available to your hair whereas micro ring hair extensions, although more expensive, offer a greater degree of flexibility.

Wigs are important to women for many reasons. Sometimes it’s just to be able to change your fashion in a flash. Another reason might be for medical issues or hair loss.

Whatever the reasons, wigs are here to stay and we love em!

I’m a fan of hair extensions and I do agree with you to choose mid grade to high quality hair extensions. They maybe pricey but worth it.
