Land the job without breaking the bank

Dec 15, 2011 by

I was invited to participate in the “Present the Best You” contest hosted by Monster.com by writing a post giving tips on how to look your best when going on an interview and telling you about the cool new BeKnown App. I have the chance to win a $500 American Express gift card, an iPhone 4S and have this blog post featured on the The BeKnown Blog.

Recently a friend of mine went on a job interview and some of the applicants wore jeans and/or flip flops (She’s in Florida). I tend to take it for granted that everyone knows you should at least wear a jacket and skirt or slacks to an interview.

It appears they don’t.

I’m sure the idea of purchasing a suit for an interview can sound expensive to someone who’s never done it before. It doesn’t have to be. One thing to keep in mind is that you don’t have to purchase a complete suit. You can make a great impression in a jacket and skirt or slacks and it’s easy to find these pieces at very reasonable prices at the thrift store.

I recently visited a local Goodwill and found two pieces that I can wear in business situations and I spent less than $12 on both!

One is a black 100% wool skirt with a lining, which makes it great to wear year round. I did a quick search and the cheapest 100% wool skirt I found was one for $30. This one cost about $6.

Here is the skirt and the lining inside of it.

The second piece was a pair of gray slacks. I did a quick search and found some for as low as $20 which is a good deal for slacks but these were about $6, which is even better.

So fear not! You can find great business separates at the thrift store and look stylish for your interview without spending a lot of money.

And while you’re checking out the local thrift store and beefing up your professional wardrobe, you should check out the BeKnown app for the iPhone or BeKnown on Facebook.

BeKnown is a professional networking app for Facebook recently launched by Monster.com. BeKnown allows you to set up a professional profile directly on Facebook that is completely separate from your personal page. College Pages is one feature that allows you to network with fellow alumni of the schools you have attended and view job postings from fellow graduates. Now that you know where to find a great, inexpensive outfit, you can line up those interviews with confidence.

As a thank you for participating in this contest, I received a cute business card holder and makeup color palate. I also got one to giveaway! It’s a great business starter kit. In order to enter the contest, which ends Jan. 9, post a comment sharing at least one tip you would give someone about to go on their first interview. Can’t wait to hear your tips!

GW Boutique by Thread Conscious

The other day I was browsing around the very cute Thread Conscious blog. I’ve posted articles from there here in the past but I hadn’t visited in a while so I stopped by to see what was happening with the fabulous Nik who writes Thread Conscious. I initially noticed that she’s been busy posting lots of great fashion related things going on in Dallas, TX but then I saw a post mentioning the GW Boutique. I was intrigued because as I read the post, I noticed that the GW stood for Goodwill.

I know I haven’t done a lot on thrifting here aside from this video where I showed you my recent purse purchases, but it is a great way to add to your wardrobe without spending much money. I do plan on doing more in the future so stay tuned.

But I digress…

I was so interested in this GW Boutique that I searched Thread Conscious for other posts that gave more detail and I found one. Apparently, Goodwill Industries has decided to create a retail shopping experience where you get thrift store prices but in an environment that feels less like thrifting and more like boutique shopping. This looks fabulous! I immediately pulled up the website and was saddened to see that there is only one GW Boutique right now, in Keller, Texas. So if any of you guys are in that area, I suggest you check it out but before you do, visit these posts on Thread Conscious and get some insight into what to expect.

Update: GW Boutique 2011

And a note to the folks over at Goodwill Industries, please look into putting more of the boutiques in other cities. *cough* Atlanta…Just saying…

Thrifting-Purses

Feb 5, 2011 by

Recently, I went on an impromptu thrifting outing with some fabulous ladies. I’m not a serious thrifter but I can definitely attest to the great bargains someone can come across at a thrift store. In my most recent trip, I got three cool purses and spent about $9 for all of them. Here’s a short video I did about my experience and to show off my purchases. Enjoy!

Thanks to my fabulous thrifting companions who suggested the outing:

Alexis, a lifestyle hair blogger at http://curlscoilsandkinks.com
Sharita, a professional makeup artist who’s a fashion and beauty blogger at www.perfectly-pretty.com
Adrienne, a lifestyle hair blogger at http://memyhairandthecity.com
Farrah, a lifestyle hair blogger at www.mahoganyknots.com

Check out these ladies’ blogs and get some great tips on everything from fashion, hair, beauty and even thrifting!

Eco-friendly Fashion-Take old pieces and make them new!

Nov 7, 2010 by

I know I’m always talking about stores like Target, Walmart and Dots when it comes to finding great clothes at reasonable prices. Well there is another way you can update your wardrobe without spending much or any money at all; closet shopping. I know that all of us have clothes and shoes in our closets that we haven’t worn in years (or ever with the tags still on). Now is the time to take those pieces out and reconsider them. Before you give them to charity, consider tweaking them some. Eco-Fashion and Clothing Reconstruction is a wonderful way to take those pieces that you don’t wear any more and turn them into something that you would wear.

I’ve done something similar with t-shirts where I may cut a slit down the front and shorten the sleeves to make it more chic and sexy. However, I am no seamstress (yet. I’m determined to get better at sewing) so here is a link to a post from the blog, Beauty Made Fresh, where Chelsea Hoffman goes into more detail and even shows a piece that she reconstructed.

I hope this post inspires some of you to go closet shopping and reconstruct some of your own pieces. If you do, please share!! Send me a picture of the piece you reconstructed (preferably with you wearing it) to info at cluelessfashionista dot com.

Online Shopping Sites by Thread Conscious

Oct 20, 2010 by

Online shopping has gotten really popular in recent years. At one point if you wanted to find great deals on designer duds, you had to scour Ebay and stalk different auctions to land that coveted item. Well you can still do that, but now there are even more options. In fact, if you scroll down the lovely blog here, you will see a badge that says, “Shop It To Me Trendsetter” because that is exactly what I am. Shop It To Me is a wonderful shopping website that sends you emails with sales and shopping deals on stores and designers that you like. It’s a great way to monitor sales remotely.

There’s this wonderful blog called Thread Conscious owned and operated by a lovely lady named Nik. Thread Conscious is a fashion blog that gives tips on how to be fashionable without breaking the budget. As you all know, I’m a big fan of looking good for less so of course I love this blog. Well, Nik put together a post outlining some of the shopping sites that she recommends. Check it out. She actually talks about some sites that I haven’t heard of yet. Make sure you join some and see how you like them, they’re free to join.

Enjoy!
