Back to Basics: Heels 101

Feb 21, 2011 by

I am a big fan of high heels. I’ve always wished I were at least 5’7 and since I fall two inches short of that, I have always looked for ways to be taller. When I first started wearing heels, I started small with one to two inches and chunky ones but it didn’t take me long to graduate to three and then four and five inch heels. Currently, my highest heel is about 5 and a half inches, possibly 6. Here are some quick tips on how you can start building your heel wardrobe if you want to wear some of the popular, super high heels.

1. Start small. If you routinely wear flats or kitten heels, you shouldn’t jump right into a pair of 6 inch stilettos. Move up gradually. If you have never worn heels before, try out some 2 inch ones. If you typically wear low heels and want to upgrade, move to 3 inches. The key to wearing heels is balance. Balance is a learned skill and will develop over time.

2. Practice, practice, practice! There is nothing worse than seeing a woman out wearing a fabulous pair of heels walking poorly. Even if you’re a heels veteran, you should do a practice run around your house to get comfortable in your heels before you head out into the world.

3. Be realistic. When you try on your shoes in the store, if you simply cannot walk in them, don’t get them. Go lower or chunkier in your heel.

Previously, I posted a great video that gave tips on walking in heels. Here’s a link to it: Walking in Heels. I also found a cool video that gives some good tips on walking in heels. It’s a bit campy but there are a few good tips in it. Also, it’s an international video so the voice over in it references heel height in cm rather than in. For clarification, 10 cm=3.94 in. I hope these are helpful. How to Walk in High Heels
