Back to Basics: Wearing makeup to compliment, not hide

Apr 7, 2011 by

About six months ago, I posted an installment of the Ladies Let’s Talk series about wearing too much makeup. I have been inspired to touch on this topic again but in a slightly different way.

Yes, there is a type of makeup called concealer and you can use makeup to cover things up. However, the main purpose of wearing it is to play up your best features. If you haven’t already, take a minute to look at your face in a mirror. You want to assess your face and figure out the features you like the best.

Do this now. I’ll wait.

Done? OK, good. This short exercise is designed to make you look at yourself and pick out things you like rather than focusing on the things you’d like to change. You should have chosen at least one or two features that you like best. Now you can look for makeup to highlight those areas.

For example, I like my eyes so I always wear mascara and a touch of eyeliner. When I’m jazzing things up, I’ll put on eye shadow and darken my mascara. Since I want people to notice my eyes, I will do a clear or light gloss on my lips so the attention goes to my eyes. I don’t do a lot, but even a little makes a difference.

Don’t look at makeup as a way to hide yourself. Look at it as a way to make you stand out in the best way possible. Here’s the previous post I wrote which gives some more practical tips as well as links you back to previous instructional posts.

Ladies Let’s Talk-Wearing too much makeup

Oct 1, 2010 by

Here is the latest installment of the Ladies Let’s Talk series where I address wearing too much makeup. Since this series is meant to help and not just criticize, here are some links to previous posts that include videos showing you how to apply makeup to get the most out of it. I am a big fan of makeup and I support everyone doing the same. However, caking it on is going to have the exact opposite effect. It won’t make you look better, it will make you look worse. Ladies, let’s work on using makeup to enhance our natural beauty and not as a cover up. It shouldn’t be a mask. I hope you take some time to browse around here because there are some great videos up that show makeup basics. Here are some links to a few:

If you’re going to be in Atlanta this week and are interested in learning more about makeup and how to apply it, you should definitely check out this class hosted by P3 Lab and Mimi J Artistry. I know I’m always talking about visiting a makeup counter for help but if you have an opportunity to attend a class that’s not too expensive (this one is $20 in advance, $25 the day of the event), you should take it. Click on the picture below to be taken to the website so you can purchase your ticket. Since I won’t be able to attend myself, I would love to hear how it went and I can share your thoughts on the blog.

How do I wear that trend…nude and pale lip color

Jun 5, 2009 by

In keeping up with the current makeup trend of nude makeup, nude and pale lip color is a great way to top off a nude face. The easiest way to wear a nude or pale lip color is to wear a lip gloss. Typically pale lip glosses go on shiny with just a hint of color. If you’ve never experimented with the pale lip color before, I would suggest visiting the local drug store and picking up some Wet N’ Wild or other low cost makeup. You could also order some from www.elf.com.

The secret to a nude lip is to wear it lightly. Don’t apply it too heavily. It won’t look like darker colors when you put it on so if you’re used to wearing dark lipstick, it may take some getting used to. Once you master the nude lip color, you will have a wider variety of looks at your disposal.

Cleaning your makeup brushes

Happy Holidays!

I heard my official Christmas song on the radio the other day so now in my mind it is officially the holidays.  For anyone who’s curious, the song is “This Christmas” by Donny Hathaway.  Once I hear that song, it truly feels like Christmas for me.  Ok, back to the blog subject at hand.

I’ve started to talk about makeup brushes and featured a video or two about how to choose one or using one in applying your makeup.  As a makeup brush newbie, I am quickly learning how much easier it is to get the most desired results when you use a makeup brush rather than what is typically provided for you in the makeup packaging.  Now if you typically buy your makeup from a counter or store like Mac or Lancome, you may not get the applicators that can come with the drug store makeup like CoverGirl or Wet N Wild (don’t knock it.  They make some good products.  You just have to try them out but at those low prices, it’s worth the gamble.  I have sensitive skin and have never broken out using their products either).  However, as someone who uses Mac for some things but drug store brands for others, I typically used the applicator provided to apply my makeup.  I have recently started using brushes and the blending and coverage control is much better with a brush.  With that being said, brushes are typically something you would keep long term (at least 3 months, if not longer) and they need to be cleaned regularly.  I found a great video about how to properly clean your makeup brushes from the lovely, xteener on youtube.  I’ve posted a few of her videos and I like how thorough she is with spelling things out.  Even if you don’t think you need to, check out this video.  It’s only 7:37 long so it won’t take much time out of your day and it’s very helpful.  I figured I was doing everything OK with my brush cleaning and I learned a helpful tip.

If you’d like to check out more of her videos, visit her page on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/user/xteeener. Happy brush washing!
