Hello Mark,
Teamwork is important. Bees can show you something about teamwork. On a warm day about half the bees in a hive stay inside beating their wings while the other half go out to gather pollen and nectar. Because of the beating wings, the temperature inside the hive is about 10 degrees cooler than outside. The bees rotate duties and the bees that cool the hive one day are honey gatherers the next. By working together, bees sustain life and fulfill their purpose.
This week we got to see some great examples of teamwork taking place on the campus of Corner Lake Middle School. On Wednesday evening, I arrived home at about 7:00 PM.Not long after arriving home, I received a phone call that a water mainline that supplies the Corner Lake community with water had ruptured. The result was that in addition to thousands of homes in community not having water, three schools had no water – Columbia Elementary School, Corner Lake Elementary School, and East River High School.
The teamwork began as I spent the rest of the night on the phone with district leaders working together to formulate a plan for holding school on Thursday with the possibility of no water. Having the full support of a capable team was every helpful and encouraging. Thankfully, water was restored around 11:00 PM Wednesday night, however, we learned that there would be a boil-water advisory Thursday when we returned to school.
The teamwork continued on Thursday morning as we prepared for the start of school.Cases of bottled water were delivered at 7:30 AM. Staff quickly jumped in to help me organize the water in preparation to distribute the water to students and staff. The Food and Nutrition team quickly worked together to begin preparing breakfast and lunch for students that did not require water. As students arrived to school, the leadership team worked together to distribute water to students and following distributing water to students, they handed out water to teachers and staff.
In addition to staff working together as a team, several parents graciously asked if we needed help as they dropped their student off for school. Also, many students kindly asked if there was any way in which they could assist. Everyone’s help and teamwork helped things to run smoothly and efficiently. And everyone’s helps and teamwork was greatly appreciated. I was so proud and honored to be a part of such a strong and supportive community.
Challenging times can bring out the worst in people, but challenging times can also bring out the best in people. I am very happy that when we face a challenging time at Corner Lake Middle School that I always, without fail, see the very best in people.Thank you very much for your continued help and support. This week we clearly saw once again why Corner Lake Middle School is such a special community of people who are committed to working together as a team to help kids. Have a great weekend!

Eagle Athletics
1) In Athletics, on Thursday afternoon (9/19), our Eagle soccer teams travelled to Discovery for a makeup game with big implications. The girls started us off and it was hard fought through most of the game. Our Lady Eagles had several shots on goal but just couldn’t connect. But they kept fighting and finally got a goal, ending the game 1-0!With that win it secured our girls a spot in the county playoffs! Congrats Lady Eagles!!!
The boys followed and played hard as well. It was a back and forth game, both teams getting opportunities on goals, however it was Discovery that was able to convert their shots. The game ended 3-0 in Discovery’s favor, unfortunately ending the boys chance at securing a spot in the playoffs.

See You at the Pole Event
Fellowship of Christians Athletes and Corner Lake Middle School students participated in the special event, See You at the Pole, last Wednesday, September 25. This is an event where students from all around the United States meet at their school’s flagpole to pray for their schools, families, friends, government, and nation.
Above and just below:
Mrs. Watson’s classes (8th grade ELA) played a Jeopardy game to review for an upcoming assessment.
Eighth graders completed their quarter 1 book project where they had to create a Book Bento that included 5 items pictured with their books and had to explain how each item related to their books. Nearby are some examples from Mrs. Hurtado’s and Mrs. Watson’s classes.
Mr. Ho A Yun’s classes made ice-cream with some help from former CLMS alumni!
Hispanic Heritage Month at CLMS
Our students have been learning about the 21 Hispanic countries’ culture and history in Mrs. Maeso’s Spanish classes. This is one of the best times in the classroom. The students from the Spanish 1 class shown their creativity by painting the Hispanic flags on marshmallows, after learning about each country’s main information. The Spanish 2 students delighted themselves creating recipes from different countries and sharing them in Spanish with their classmates. They practiced the language and tasted the interesting variations of some traditional plates. Can you imagine an empanada made out of doughnut and sprinkles? The Hispanic celebration is still going on!
