3. Requiem For A River – A Film by Mary Patierno
Requiem for a River explores the New Mexico stretch of the Rio Grande — an iconic but endangered American waterway — in a time of climate change and calls for ...
The Río Grande emerges from the high snowfields of the San Juan Mountains of the Colorado Rockies. For the first 20 miles it is crystalline and free flowing. But from there, it is one of the most controlled and heavily adjudicated bodies of water in the U.S.; an irrigation system regulated by treaties, state compacts and water rights dating to the mid-1800s. Until it reaches the Gulf of Mexico at Brownsville, TX more than 1,800 miles away, dams, levees and irrigation diversions account for every drop. Its basin spans three U.S. states and five Mexican states – Colorado, New Mexico and Texas in the U.S. and Durango, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas in Mexico.

Every decade since 1992, Sight and Sound has complemented its celebrated critics’ poll by formally sounding out the world’s leading directors on the ten films they believe to be the greatest of all time. Though it has always been global and inclusive in scope, the poll has expanded significantly each decade. In 1992, 101 directors voted; fast-forward to 2012, when 358 filmmakers took part. We take our diet to new extremes this week. We don’t juice or do keto and we certainly don’t want to eat any nasty grapefruit, which would just make us all miserable, so we decided to eat hard-boiled eggs and bagels before discussing Requiem for a Dream. Is this film about making addicted people miserable just for misery’s sake or is there something in the story that makes the misery much more meaningful? We’ll let you ponder the film’s existential crisis. We’re going to lay off the hard stuff for now. The refrigerator needs our attention.
